Chennai, 21st September 2017:  CLRI ( Central Leather Research Institute ) in association with NS ECO Solution Pvt Ltd, a joint venture by Naser Group and Saba Group, which aims at providing eco friendly and environmentally sustainable solutions across leather industries, launched the Dry Tan Product for the tannery industry. CLRI through its continuous research have developed this product that can be replaced conventional mode of tanning used for a century . The product is a brainchild of CLRI that helps reduce water consumption and salinity in the tanning process of leather.

The Indian Leather Industry accounts for 12.3% of worldwide leather production and also plays a major role in the economy and growth of exports. Tamil Nadu is one among other major states to have larger production of leather accounting to 40% of the country’s leather production.

However, with increasing norms on safeguarding the environment, there are a lot of challenges faced by the tannery industries. The leather industry uses a lot of chemicals and water for the tanning process and with this it becomes a challenge for the industries to adhere to producing reduced effluents which is far from possible. There is an increase in the cost of production due to the stringent norms and the smaller tanning industries have a lower level of technology.

Speaking on the sustainable solutions provided by the company ,  Mr S.K. Sabapathy, Managing Director , Saba Group said, “ Over the years, a lot of norms has been introduced to safeguard the environment and with this, a lot of technology and innovation has entered across manufacturing industries. The Dry tan technology will be a shot in the arm for the tanning industry which will help meet the environmental guidelines thereby improving the quality of production.”

Also, with environmental boards enforcing zero-liquid discharge in all manufacturing sectors it has become a major concern among the leather industries. Every day around 900 million litres of water is used to process 30,000 tonnes of raw hides and skins. “Water is an important medium in leather making and tanning process. The Dry Tan will eliminate the water consumption and thus help industries overcome the challenge of bringing down the polluting effluents. It can also safeguard the labours from getting exposed to more chemicals as majority of the process is done manually,” says, Mr AG Naser Ahmed, Managing Director, Naser Group

Dr. B Chandrasekaran, Director, CSIR-CLRI, said that, “Dry tan technology is a game changer which will provide economical and environmental benefits to tanning sector.”

Adding further to the benefits of dry tan, inventor of the technology, Dr. C. Muralidharan, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CLRI, said that, “The method does not require additional or new infrastructure and reduces the chemical input by 30% and eliminates use of salt, acid and water. Above all these benefits, the method helps in saving time and energy, thereby enhancing the overall production of leather. It is versatile in application for both hides and skins. This technology changes a century old practice for sustainable development of tanning industry.”

The technology is sure to address the challenges faced by tanning industries and will also contribute largely to the Make in India concept.
